Arahina Ministry and Function Centre, New Zealand

Arahina Ministry and Function Centre (Arahina) was purchased from the New Zealand Girl Guide Association in the year 2000 by the Institute in Basic Life Principles (‘IBLP’ or ‘Institute’); a Christian, not-for-profit, non-sectarian training and community service organization.  It was used as a national training centre for the Institutes home education programme and as a national office for the Institute‚Äôs other ministries.

Today Arahina operates as a Ministry and Function Centre with education and training incorporated into Arahina’s wider ministry.  Arahina’s wider ministry includes Alternative Education for the Ministry of Education and residential services for Child Youth and Family referred youth.  Ministry also includes community service to local public schools, budget advice, work experience for those with disabilities, internships and counselling.  Functions include use of Arahina’s facilities for functions, meetings, accommodation and training.  Income from functions are used to partially fund Arahina’s ministry.

Financial Accountability

Arahina, owned by IBLP, is a member of the Evangelical Council for Financial Accountability.  Its global accounts are audited annually by public accounting firm LWBJ Financial.  In New Zealand IBLP is incorporated under the Charitable Trusts Act 1957 as of 31 May 1990.  Its annual financial statements are signed off by Markhams Chartered Accountancy firm. As at December 2008, IBLP in New Zealand is staffed entirely by volunteer staff.  It receives income from tuition and service fees, publications, ministry products, donations and use of its facilities.

Taxation and Charitable Donations

New Zealand’s Inland Revenue Department approved IBLP’s charitable status in New Zealand on 22 Jan 1991 and later confirmed the IBLP as a “donee” organisation.  IBLP’s donee status can be verified at http://www.ird.govt.nz/donee-organisations  Donations to a donee organisation can generally claim a tax credit (formerly rebate). Companies (including certain societies) and Maori authorities, can claim a deduction for donations they make to a donee organisation.  Please seek financial advice from a chartered accountant if you have further questions about tax credit on a donation you would like to make.

IBLP is registered as a charity with the New Zealand Government Charities Commission under the Charities Act 2005 as of 20 June 2008.  Its registration number is CC30138.  Registration can be verified at http://www.register.charities.govt.nz/charitiesregister  IBLP, as a registered charity, is exempt from income tax and donors of gifts to IBLP are exempt from gift duty.
